What is a septic tank?
A septic tank is an underground chamber usually constructed of plastic, fibreglass or concrete. It is used to drain domestic wastewater from toilets, sinks, baths and showers into a tank for the purpose of basic separation. If your property is not connected to mains drainage then you will required a septic tank to break down solids so that the resulting liquid can be treated: Once this treatment has taken place, the remaining liquid will discharge directly into the ground through a drainage field commonly referred to as a soakaway.
What is a domestic sewage treatment plant?
Domestic sewage treatments plants are used where there is no mains drainage access and as an alternative to septic tanks. They act as independent wastewater treatment systems and are designed to receive all the wastewater from residential properties and promote the growth of aerobic micro-organisms: These organisms break down the water waste and produce an environmentally friendly product suitable to discharge safely into a soakaway.
What is the difference between a septic tank and a sewage treatment plant?
A sewage treatment plant produces a non-polluting, cleaner and environmentally safe product that can be dispersed into a watercourse. They usually require electricity and require regular servicing and emptying.
Septic tanks produce a less-clean end product which must be dispersed into soakaway and is further processed by the natural aerobic bacteria in soil. They don’t requires electricity and need emptying once a year.
